Program: Batteries
Batteries play an important part in almost every facet of amateur radio. The history of batteries goes back over 200 years and yet the greatest strides in improving energy density versus weight have occurred mainly in the last 20 years. Newer, lighter and more powerful batteries have led to an explosion of portable devices that were only once dreamed of. Making DX contacts from mountain tops or powering a base station through the use of solar cells connected to rechargeable, lightweight batteries is now commonplace. Yet, there are many options and things to know about batteries before one can safely optimize their use in a particular setting. A PowerPoint presentation will provide a brief history of this technology, demonstrate that different applications may require different types of batteries and finally, will point out some safety tips when dealing with batteries.
I hope you can make it and join in the discussion as many of you have a lot more hands-on experience and have plenty to add.
